Budget 2026: AI adoption
Budget 2026 supports AI adoption through a mix of measures: the Productivity Mega Deduction announced in September covers software purchases, and the budget announces access to 500 MW of sovereign AI compute through financial tools. It also describes previously announced Mitacs placements and an open-source consortium for small businesses, alongside direct equity in Cohere of up to $1.6 billion.
Tax and compute support
Immediate expensing for software and technology, and compute access through backstops and offtake agreements.

Businesses of all sizes can now deduct the full cost of a new investment immediately. Under the Productivity Mega Deduction, eligible investments acquired on or after September 15, 2026, can be deducted right away. This lowers the upfront cost of investing and gives businesses of every size a stronger incentive to purchase equipment, adopt technology, expand operations, and create jobs. It covers far more of the investments businesses make every day. About two thirds of capital assets will qualify for immediate expensing, compared with approximately 15% previously. That means businesses of every size can benefit— from a local business purchasing new kitchen equipment, tools, office technology, or farm machinery to a growing company investing in manufacturing and mining equipment, pipelines, construction vehicles, software, research and development, fibre-optic cables, or rail track.
